In the first half of 2026, 19% of U.S. higher ed submissions measured as more than 80% AI-generated, double the 10% rate in the United Kingdom and Australia. At the K-12 level, only 5% to 6% of papers hit that threshold across all three countries. Tim Needles, a technology integration specialist at New York’s Smithtown Central School District, observes a more cautious approach from administrators due to social and political pitfalls. In higher ed, he notes, the landscape resembles “the Wild West,” with inconsistent policies across institutions.

What Students Actually Want: Drafting Feedback

Students are using AI not just to finish work but to improve. During the drafting stage of an assignment, 43% seek AI feedback, compared to 18% for proofreading and 11% for getting started. Of those seeking drafting help, 72% ask for feedback like, “Am I aligned with the rubric?” Michael Harvey, director of teaching and learning at Lytton High School in Gisborne, New Zealand, finds this shift significant, moving the conversation from “whether” students use AI to “when and why.” He notes the reported focus on feedback aligns with his observations. However, Moyer questions if students know how to ask for effective help, saying vague prompts like “Is my paper good?” yield unhelpful answers.

The Demand for Tools Built for the Classroom

Educators are clear: generic AI won’t cut it. The Turnitin report indicates teachers see little value in AI that lacks flexibility for teaching needs, customization to match assignment design, or transparency into student use. Tools must save time or directly support learning, such as scaffolding assignments. Marisa Mission, a senior analyst at Bellwether Education Partners, confirms this demand from conversations with principals. “They typically produce better outputs,” she says of education-specific AI, noting they align with better teaching practices. This need for tailored solutions is felt acutely by Perla Lujan, head of the social science department at Mexico City’s Prepa Anahuac, who struggles to keep pace with AI tools while preparing students for exams and maintaining curriculum rigor.

A Tipping Point Yet to Come

The integration of AI in education is still nascent. Tim Needles predicts a more consistent usage pattern in two to three years, stating, “We haven’t even reached the tipping point with AI yet.” The urgency for a plan is palpable. While teacher-led innovation is valuable, Moyer cautions that school leadership must “get on top of this and have a plan.” Antero Garcia of the National Council of Teachers of English offers a balanced view, acknowledging teachers who are excited to explore AI’s possibilities alongside those who “rightfully have concerns.” The path forward hinges on providing educators with the right tools and the authority to shape their use.
